Syria closes Lebanon crossing

TRIPOLI, Lebanon, June 21 (UPI) -- Syrian officials closed a border crossing to Lebanon because of fighting between Lebanese troops and militants at a refugee camp near Tripoli.

The border crossing will stay closed "until calm has returned to northern Lebanon," the Syrian official news agency Sana said Wednesday.

The Jussa-Al-Qaa closing was intended "to protect Syrian and Lebanese citizens," Sana said. Two border crossings remained open.

The Lebanese army and Fatah al-Islam militants have been fighting since May 20. Damascus denied Lebanese allegations that the group is linked to Syrian intelligence, Al-Jazeera reported.

Also, the Lebanese government reported to the United Nations that Palestinian groups in Lebanon were rearming.

"We have provided the U.N. Security Council with a full set of proofs on the interruption of weapons on the reinforcement of positions of Palestinians related to Syria," Marwan Hamada, the Lebanese telecommunications minister, told Al Jazeera.
