Suit blames Grand Theft Auto for killings

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Relatives have filed a lawsuit against Sony claiming that compulsively playing Grand Theft Auto Vice City helped turn a New Mexico teen into a killer.

Cody Posey was convicted earlier this year of killing three family members on former ABC reporter Sam Donaldson's ranch in Hondo Valley. The lawsuit also names Posey as a defendant, the Albuquerque Tribune reported.

"A video game may not, by itself, cause a teen or another individual to kill, but it can provide an indispensable or final link in a causal chain that results in tragedy," the plaintiffs said in court papers.

Posey, 14 at the time of the killings, shot his father, Delbert, his stepmother, Tryone, and step-sister, Marilea Schmid, in 2004. The family lived on the ranch, where his father worked.

Pat Basham, Tryone Posey's father, said he is more interested in showing the harm violent video games can do than in collecting financial damages.

"If we can get this game off the market, this kind of thing won't happen to other people like happened to us," Basham said.
