Some Kosovo Serbs trust in Russian aid

PRISTINA, Serbia, Dec. 27 (UPI) -- Serbs in Kosovo province said they were uneasy as leaders of an ethnic-Albanian majority were expected to unilaterally declare independence from Serbia.

Kosovo Serbs, as they did 104 years ago when Serbia was under Ottoman rule, said they trust in Russia coming to their aid if Kosovo Albanians proclaim the province independent of Serbia, the German Der Spiegel said Thursday.

Serb Dr. Marko Jaksic, director of a hospital in the ethnically divided town of Mitrovica in northern Kosovo, said Serbia would regain sovereignty over Kosovo through war.

Jaksic told Der Spiegel NATO peacekeepers deployed along the Kosovo northern border with Serbia won't be capable to prevent the small northern area of Kosovo from seceding and becoming part of Serbia when the Kosovo Albanian government in the capital Pristina declares independence.

Jaksic said he believed Moscow would ship weapons and military advisers past NATO troops to help Serbs in Kosovo.

Such hopes could be heard in northern Kosovo, inhabited with about 20,000 Serbs but many of the remaining 80,000 Serbs who live in southern Kosovo are said to be considering fleeing to Serbia should Kosovo become independent.
