Palestinian killed at Gaza crossing

GAZA, June 18 (UPI) -- At least one Palestinian died Monday at the closed Erez Crossing between Gaza and Israel as Israeli soldiers returned Palestinian fire.

Three people were wounded, The New York Times reported. Several hundred people, most of them Fatah supporters, have gathered on the Gaza side of the crossing in an effort to flee the territory to the Fatah-controlled West Bank.

Israel closed the Erez Crossing on Thursday after several days of fighting between Hamas and Fatah in Gaza. Hamas has effectively controlled all of Gaza since Friday.

Israeli officials say that they will not deal with Hamas in any way, even by having an open border crossing. Gaza's only link to the outside world is now one crossing with Egypt.

"Hamas is a terrorist organization," said Shlomo Dror, a spokesman for the Coordinator of Activities in the Territories, "They can't say on the one hand that they want to destroy Israel, and on the other -- we need your help. We won't help Hamas. From our point of view, let them fail."
