NATO adds 600 troops to Serbia's Kosovo

PRISTINA, Serbia, March 16 (UPI) -- NATO said it is deploying an additional 600 troops in Serbia's mainly ethnic-Albanian Kosovo province as a routine move in peacekeeping operations.

A NATO statement made available in Pristina said the deployment of 600 soldiers was not in response to possible ethnic tensions as a plan for the future status of Kosovo is being considered at the United Nations, Serbia's RTS radio-television reported Friday.

The U.N. plan reportedly foresees internationally supervised independence for Kosovo, which the Serbian government in Belgrade sharply refuses to accept. Leaders of ethnic-Albanians, who make up 90 percent of Kosovo's population of 1.8 million, insist on a Kosovo independent of Serbia.

About 17,000 NATO-led Kosovo international force is stationed in the U.N.-administered province.

U.N. administrators and NATO protection troops have been deployed in Kosovo since 1999 when the alliance's air raids stopped Serbia's military and police campaign against ethnic-Albanian separatists and civilians.
