Hispanic voters turned away from GOP

WASHINGTON, Nov. 19 (UPI) -- The Republican share of the Hispanic vote dropped significantly in the 2006 election, sparked by anger over get-tough policies on immigration.

About 30 percent of Hispanic voters chose Republican candidates, the Washington Post reported. That's down from the record 40 percent to 44 percent who supported President George W. Bush in 2004.

"I think you have to look at the Republican effort on immigration as a catastrophic mistake in a year when they made many mistakes," Simon Rosenberg, president of NDN, formerly the New Democrat Network, told the Post. "They now know that the Republican Party is hostile to Hispanics, which is something they didn't know two years ago. That's a big burden for them to overcome."

Since the election, Sen. Mel Martinez of Florida has been named Republican national chairman in an effort to woo back Hispanic voters.
