Hamas military might growing?

JERUSALEM, July 20 (UPI) -- Israeli military officials, while worried about the growth of the Hamas arsenal in Gaza, have no plans for a major offensive there, it was reported.

Top army commanders believe an invasion of Gaza would result in large Israeli casualties from bombings of communities close to the border, Haaretz reported. They are unsure if a direct military confrontation would significantly weaken Hamas.

A military source who briefed reporters Friday said Hamas has about 13,000 disciplined fighters in Gaza. He said growing numbers of weapons have been smuggled into the territory since Hamas drove out the Fatah Party.

The arsenal includes anti-tank missiles and wire-guided Sagger-type missiles, the source said. Hamas has also acquired more Qassam rockets and is likely to have either Katyusha rockets or a homemade equivalent with a similar range of up to 12 miles.
