Georgian president to resign for election

TBILISI, Georgia, Nov. 24 (UPI) -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said Saturday he will resign his post to take part in next year's presidential election.

Appearing before a meeting of the new government, Saakashvili said his resignation, effective Sunday, is intended to allowing the parliament to set the presidential election for Jan. 5, Itar-Tass reported.

Saakashvili will immediately begin campaigning for a second term in office, while Speaker Nino Burdzhanadze will serve as president until the early election date.
