Georgia wants Russians out of Abkhazia

MOSCOW, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili said Thursday Russia has no place as peacekeepers in the breakaway border region of Abkhazia.

In 1992, Abkhazia and South Ossetia each broke from Georgia and Russian troops were sent in purportedly to stop fighting between separatists and Georgian forces.

Thursday at a U.N. General Assembly meeting, Saakashvili said Russian peacekeepers should be replaced by "neutral forces," the Novosti news agency reported.

He referred to an incident Sept. 20 in which a Georgian special forces unit attacked soldiers at a military base belonging to the anti-terror center of the Abkhazian Interior Ministry.

Saakashvili said one of the soldiers killed by Georgian troops was a Russian officer.

"One has to wonder -- what was a lieutenant colonel of the Russian military doing in the Georgian forests, organizing and leading a group of armed insurgents on a mission of terror?" the president said. "I want to ask our Russian friends -- is there not enough territory in Russia?"
