Story from United Press International. Copyright 2007 by United Press International (via ClariNet) BAGHDAD, July 15 (UPI) -- A U.S. general in Iraq said Sunday the troop surge will need until spring to succeed and an early U.S. withdrawal would undo some of the operation's results. Maj. Gen. Rick Lynch, who commands 15,000 U.S. and 7,000 Iraqi troops around Baghdad, told reporters in Baghdad the troop surge ordered this year by President George W. Bush should continue into spring 2008, The New York Times reported. "It's going to take us through the summer and fall to deny the enemy his sanctuaries" south of Baghdad, said Lynch. "And then it's going to take us through the first of the year and into the spring" to consolidate gains the offensive is making now and to move Iraqi troops into areas that have been cleared of insurgents. He said if U.S. troops withdraw too soon, the result would be "an environment where the enemy could come back and fill the void." Add to: Tags Related to General: Surge needs until spring to work |
