Court upholds Thai election outcome

BANGKOK, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- The Thai parliament is set to open on schedule next week now that the country's Supreme Court has dismissed legal challenges to the December election.

The court Friday threw out a lawsuit brought by a New Aspiration Party spokesman and another brought by a Democrat Party maverick who has since quit the party, The Bangkok Star reported Saturday.

The New Aspiration challenge claimed Thai elections officials had no mandate to hold advance polls the week before the Dec. 23 election. The other suit also claimed the advance polls were flawed.

The court ruling clears the way for the parliament to open Monday and for the formation next week of a People Power Party-led coalition government.
