Bush campaigns on taxes, terrorism

TAMPA, Fla., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- U.S. President George Bush made taxes and terrorism the centerpiece of his pitch Thursday for a Republican congressional candidate in Florida.

Appearing for Gus Bilirakis, who is running for the Tampa-area seat held by his father, Rep. Mike Bilirakis, Bush painted the Democrats as the party of tax hikes. He also accused congressional Democrats of being unrealistic about the state of the world.

"And we've got to have people in the United States Congress who see the world the way it is, not the way we would like it to be," Bush said. "We can't afford to not be realistic about the world in which we live. The stakes are too high."

Polls show that many voters still see Bush as a strong fighter against terrorism while the Iraq war has become increasingly unpopular. Bush attempted to tie the two issues together, saying he believes targeting Saddam Hussein was correct.

"My view is today as it was then, he was a threat," Bush said. "You see, after 9/11, we had to take threats seriously before they came home to hurt us."
