Shin Bet: Hamas planning strike on Israel

JERUSALEM, Aug. 26 (UPI) -- The deputy chief of the Shin Bet told Israeli Cabinet members Sunday that Hamas is planning a mass terror attack on Israel in the near future.

The security service's deputy chief, known only as Y, told cabinet members Hamas has become increasingly frustrated with its international efforts, and is now targeting Israel for a major terrorist attack, Ynetnews.com reported.

"There were clear orders from the Hamas headquarters abroad to Hamas here to carry out a mass casualty attack in Israel," Y said.

The deputy chief said regional rocket attacks have increased recently, along with the number of shootings and incidents of arms smuggling. The report came as two infiltrators attacked the Erez border terminal in Israel Sunday, prompting a gun battle with Israeli forces.

The Web site said the men, who were armed with explosives and guns, were killed while one Israeli soldier was injured in the attack.
