Rally calls for ouster of Thai government

BANGKOK, April 1 (UPI) -- About 4,000 people joined a demonstration in Bangkok, defying a ban on political activities.

The Saturday rally was organized by PTV, a satellite television station founded by members of the Thai Rak Thai party of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, the Bangkok Post reported. Thaksin was ousted in a coup last year.

Speakers accused the government of trying to destroy Thaksin's reputation and demanded that Gen. Prem Tinsulanonda step down as president of the privy council.

Chaturon Chaisaeng, the acting leader of Thai Rak Thai, said the government was trying to stifle effective democracy by holding elections that would not give an opportunity for parties to present their principles.

"You did not come from elections, so you do not care and do not understand that political parties have to talk with academics and other groups and explain platforms to people," he said.

The crowd dispersed peacefully.
