SHARONVILLE, Ohio (AP) -- Both planes that collided over a Cincinnati suburb last week were mechanically sound and federal investigators are focusing on human error as a possible cause, according to a preliminary report.

Three people died when the Cessna 172 and Beechcraft Bonanza hit each other May 11, raining debris onto roads and suburban backyards. No one on the ground was hurt.

"Our big three areas are man, machine and environment," said Carl Dinwiddie, regional director of the National Safety Transportation Board. "The weather was good and we didn't find anything wrong with the airplanes. So now we are down to the area focusing on man."

A witness told investigators the planes rolled toward each other just before their wings collided, the report said.

Autopsy and drug-testing results of the two pilots won't be available for months, Dinwiddie said.

The NTSB's full investigation could take more than a year.
