Story from United Press International. Copyright 2007 by United Press International (via ClariNet) WASHINGTON, Oct. 19 (UPI) -- U.S. Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., will leave the Republican National Committee general chairman post having served with distinction, President George Bush said. In a statement regarding Martinez's departure, Bush said Martinez fulfilled his mission of ensuring "our party had the structure and resources in place for all Republican candidates in the 2008 elections to be successful." Bush said he was "grateful" for Martinez's leadership at the RNC since taking on the chairman's role nine months ago. Martinez reportedly was resigning as RNC general chairman to focus more on his senatorial duties. "Because of his leadership, more Americans understand the Republican Party's efforts to grow our economy, support our troops, strengthen our schools and protect our country," Bush said in a statement.
