Maternity czar blames TV for Caesareans

LONDON, March 11 (UPI) -- Gwyneth Lewis, government maternity czar for Britain, is blaming television programs for the nation's rise in Caesarean sections.

The Independent on Sunday reported that Lewis's comments came on the heels of a report that suggests a 14 percent increase in Caesarean sections in Britain since 1980.

Lewis cited shows including "ER" and "Emmerdale," both of which have run episodes depicting Caesarean sections, as the reason for the normalization of the procedure.

"I blame TV programs. Every time you see a pregnancy on television it seems to go wrong and ends up with a Caesarean section," Lewis said. "You never see a woman having a normal delivery."

Lewis said she would like to see the number of Caesarean sections performed go down.

Meanwhile, midwives in Britain have launched a campaign demanding that the government boost their numbers by 10,000 over the next two years, the Independent reported.
