Sweden wants report on light therapy

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, June 14 (UPI) -- The Swedish government says more evidence is needed to prove light therapy helps beat the winter blues.

Light therapy is used in Swedish psychiatric clinics to treat Seasonal Affective Disorder.

A report by the Swedish Council on Technology Assessment in Health Care said the widespread use of light therapy meant "resources should be made immediately available" for an in-depth study on the effects of the treatment, The Local said Wednesday.

The report also called for an examination of the use of light therapy for patients on anti-depressants.

While many Swedes suffer from depression during the winter months, the causes of the phenomenon are unclear, the newspaper said.

A U.S. psychiatrist coined the term Seasonal Affective Disorder in the 1980s, saying a lack of sunlight caused hormonal changes.
