Russia, Bulgaria ink nuclear power deal

Copyright 2008 by United Press International (via ClariNet) MOSCOW, Jan. 19 (UPI) -- Russia's nuclear equipment monopoly has signed a $5.9 billion contract to build a nuclear power plant in Bulgaria. Atomstroyexport signed the agreement Friday with Bulgaria's national electric company during a visit to Sofia by Russian President Vladimir Putin, RIA Novosti reported Saturday. Russia is prepared to loan Bulgaria nearly all of the money needed to complete the plant in Belene by 2014, Putin said. During Putin's visit, the two countries also agreed to build a direct international railway ferry line between the Russian port of Kavkaz and the Bulgarian port of Varna, ITAR-TASS reported Saturday.
