Report: Long waits at Canadian ERs

TORONTO, Jan. 20 (UPI) -- A lack of beds in understaffed Canadian hospitals has sent more than 150 in-need patients to the United States for treatment since spring 2006, a report said.

Canadian patients with brain hemorrhages have waited in emergency rooms for as long as eight hours before being rushed to operating-rooms in the United States, The Toronto Globe and Mail reported Saturday.

"There have been very serious healthcare problems that have arisen in neurosurgical patients because of the lack of ability to attain timely transport to expert neurosurgical centers in Ontario," said R. Loch Macdonald of St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto.

A December report to the government by a University of Toronto doctor recommended a two-part solution which included increased neurosurgical capability and emergency patient transfers out of the country for one hospital, and expanded patient center capacities in Ontario.
