Millions in Britain to try to quit smoking

LONDON, Jan. 9 (UPI) -- Almost 3 million smokers in Britain are expected to try and quit smoking ahead of a July 1 smoking ban, says the group No Smoking Day.

One in four British smokers said that banning smoking in bars, clubs and restaurants would be the boost they need to try and ditch cigarettes, according to the survey by GfK NOP.

"Millions see England's move to going smoke free as a chance to make a fresh start," said Ben Youdan, chief executive of No Smoking Day. No Smoking Day is an annual health awareness campaign that helps smokers quit that is held on the second Wednesday in March. The campaign is now in its 24th year.

By quitting at the New Year or on No Smoking Day a smoker can be totally smoke free well in advance of the July ban.

The London-based anti-smoking non-profit organization says quitting smoking can result in:

-- An improved sex life because smoking can create hormonal imbalances that decrease libido.

-- Quitters feeling fitter within two weeks of stopping.

Using a National Health Service stop smoking service is four times more likely to work than quitting cold turkey, the organization says.
