LOS ANGELES, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Parts of Southern California experienced critical fire conditions Wednesday as warm, dry Santa Ana winds made the area a potential tinderbox, officials said.

The National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for the Southern California coast from the U.S.-Mexico border north to Los Angeles and coastal Ventura County through 6 p.m. PDT Friday, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

A red flag warning is issued when weather conditions raise the threat of wildfires.

Wednesday's gusty winds were expected to diminish Thursday night, but relative humidity could fall below 10 percent, the forecast said.
