Cancer pain often left untreated

MILAN, Italy, June 11 (UPI) -- Half of all cancer patients suffer moderate to severe pain, but 20 percent are not given pain treatment, according to the interim findings of a European study.

The European Pain in Cancer survey is the largest study on the prevalence, treatment and impact of cancer-related pain, according to Dr. Franco De Conno, director of the Rehabilitation and Palliative Care Unit, National Cancer Institute, in Milan, Italy.

A total of 4,824 patients from 12 European countries were contacted to participate in the survey. The results highlight that pain is a significant factor in reducing quality of life in people with cancer, and is often inadequately controlled, said De Conno.

The findings show that of those cancer patients who experienced moderate to severe pain in the last month, pain is frequent -- half suffer daily pain -- and long lasting, with almost one-third having endured pain for more than a year.
