'Halo 3' earns $170M in first day of sales

OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 28 (UPI) -- "Halo 3" racked up $170 million in sales its first day in stores, earning it the distinction as the most successful debut in U.S. video game history.

The Xbox 360 game is the eagerly awaited new installment of the "Halo" franchise and retails for about $60.

In terms of dollars spent, "Halo 3" had a better first day than even the best-selling movie of all time -- "Spider-Man 3," which made $151 million during three days -- and the final Harry Potter book, which raked in an estimated $166 million its first day on sale, The Christian Science Monitor reported Friday.

"I told my boss three or four months ago I wasn't coming in," fan Malcolm Lear told the newspaper as he waited hours in line Monday to buy his copy of the game. "I have a can of Red Bull at home and it's going to keep me up for a long time."
