Jerry Springer

Gerald Norman Springer was born on February 13, 1944 in London, England. In 1949, his parents moved to the United States, where Springer earned a B.A. from Tulane University and a J.D. from Northwestern University. He was elected to the Cincinnati city council in 1971, but resigned in 1974 after he admitted to hiring a prostitute. In 1975, Springer won back his position, and in 1977 he was selected to serve one year as the mayor of Cincinnati by the City Council. After a failed campaign for Governor of Ohio, Springer turned to journalism and was given a commentary spot on a radio show, eventually becoming a station’s primary news anchor and managing editor, winning 10 local Emmy awards within a two year span. In 1991, “The Jerry Springer Show” debuted as a replacement for the “The Phil Donahue Show.” However, the show began as a political discussion show. In order to boost ratings, Springer decided to go the trashier route and began inviting shocking guests onto the show. Many fights broke out on the set, and foul language became commonplace. Contrary to some beliefs, Springer maintains that he never “fixes” any of his shows. Springer is currently competing on “Dancing With the Stars” on ABC. “Jerry Springer - The Opera” was based on his television show, and played at the Royal National Theatre in London before moving to London’s West End. It won the 2004 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Musical.
