Speedway charges NASCAR with anti-trust

LEXINGTON, Ky., April 26 (UPI) -- The Kentucky Speedway claimed in U.S. District Court that NASCAR should pay it $500 million for alleged anti-trust violations.

The Gallatin County, Ky., track dropped a lawsuit seeking a Nextel Cup NASCAR race, the Cincinnati Post reported.

An amended Kentucky Speedway complaint charges that NASCAR and the International Speedway Corp., which owns several tracks across the United States, "make the most egregious tactics of NASCAR drivers fighting for position look like a leisurely Sunday afternoon drive in the country," the Post reported.

The lawsuit said NASCAR has elevated ticket prices, reduced prizes and limited broadcast and sponsorship options.

It also said NASCAR and the ISC have "hurt independent racetracks such as Kentucky Speedway by doling out Nextel Cup races to those tracks that will best protect the market power of NASCAR and ISC -- to the detriment of Kentucky Speedway and of all those who want to see true competition in the stock car

racing industry," the Post reported.

A U.S. District Court judge scheduled a May 24 hearing in Lexington, Ky., on the new complaint.
