Priest Holmes will try to play for Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo., July 25 (UPI) -- Kansas City running back Priest Holmes, who missed all of the 2006 season with a hip injury, informed the Chiefs Wednesday he would report to training camp.

Holmes has been given clearance to play by the team's orthopedic physicians, as well as the specialists he has consulted.

After missing the end of the 2005 season, Holmes had hip surgery and he did not recover sufficiently to play last year. He is under contract through the 2009 season.

"In my conversation with Priest, he was excited about playing," Chiefs President Carl Peterson said.

"Later, (Chiefs Coach Herm Edwards) and I sat down with Priest here in Kansas City and discussed his decision and our thoughts on his return. We may put him on active PUP (Physically Unable to Perform) initially to gauge his football conditioning and to see how he feels after non-contact drills.

"But he indicated very strongly to me that he wanted to play and his motivation was to help the Kansas City Chiefs win a championship."

Since signing with the Chiefs in 2001, Holmes has run for 5,933 yards and 76 touchdowns.
