Perez out 80 games for failing drug test

NEW YORK, Aug. 3 (UPI) -- Major League Baseball announced Friday Detroit infielder Neifi Perez has been suspended for 80 games because of his third drug test failure.

The suspension will begin Saturday.

In 33 games this season, Perez is batting .172 with a home run and six RBI.

Under terms of baseball's collective bargaining agreement, the first test failure results in counseling. The second brings about a 25-game suspension, which Perez served earlier this year after testing positive for amphetamines.
