Pedro Martinez is done for the year

NEW YORK, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- The New York Mets said Thursday night starter Pedro Martinez is done for the season because of a torn tendon in his left calf.

On its Web site, the team said the injury was discovered during an MRI.

The 34-year-old right-hander was scheduled to be the Mets' starting pitcher in Game One of the National League divisional playoffs next week.

"It's part of the game," said General Manager Omar Minaya. "Injuries are part of the game when you put a team together."

Martinez will be "baseball-incapacitated" for 4-6 weeks.

Minaya also said the Mets are unsure whether Martinez would rejoin the team next year.

This season, Martinez was 9-8 with a career-high ERA of 4.48.

In 23 starts and 132 2/3 innings, he had 39 walks and 137 strikeouts.
