TORONTO, April 21 (UPI) -- Vince Carter scored nine of his 16 points in the fourth quarter Saturday as New Jersey beat Toronto 96-91.

The victory over his former team came in the opener of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.

Carter, who was booed every time he touched the ball, made only five of 19 shots, but came through in the end.

Richard Jefferson led New Jersey with 28 points and five rebounds. Bostjan Nachbar had 16 points, five rebounds and four assists, and Jason Kidd added eight points, 15 assists and 10 rebounds.

Kidd had 11 assists in the first half, after which New Jersey had a 51-41 lead.

Mikki Moore made two free throws for a 94-88 New Jersey lead with 15.3 seconds remaining.

Chris Bosh was plagued by foul problems, but led Toronto with 22 points and five rebounds.

The Raptors also got 21 points from T.J. Ford, and 16 points and nine rebounds from Anthony Parker.
