CLEVELAND, May 6 (UPI) -- LeBron James had a team-high 21 points Sunday, as the Cleveland Cavaliers beat New Jersey, 81-77, in the Game 1 of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

Cleveland led, 43-41, at the half, but New Jersey tied the nip-and-tuck contest at 59 heading into the fourth quarter.

A three-pointer by Larry Hughes gave Cleveland a 74-69 advantage with 4:41 remaining, and New Jersey never recovered.

Hughes had 17 points, six assists and four steals; Sasha Pavlovic had 15 points, two assists and three blocked shots; Drew Gooden had 14 points and 14 rebounds; and James had 11 rebounds and seven assists for the Cavaliers -- who have eliminated New Jersey the last two times the teams have met in the post-season.

Vince Carter led New Jersey with 21 points, 13 rebounds and six assists. Richard Jefferson scored 16 points, and Bostjan Nachbar scored 12.

Game 2 is at Cleveland Tuesday.
