NASCAR - It is the most popular motor sport in the world today. It was co-founded by William France Sr. and Ed Otto in 1948 in the USA. Officially incorporated on February 21, its purpose was to organize and promote the sport of stock car racing. The three largest racing series' sanctioned by NASCAR are the Nextel Cup, Busch Series and the Craftsman Truck Series. It also sanctions the Weekly Dodge Series, Regional Racing Series, and modified racing. NASCAR's headquarters are located in Daytona Beach, Florida, although it also maintains offices near Charlotte, North Carolina and in New York City. The majority of NASCAR teams are located in the Charlotte-metro area, especially in the Mooresville area. The majority of NASCAR drivers also maintain their primary residences near Charlotte. The first NASCAR race ever was held at the old Charlotte Speedway in North Carolina on June 19, 1949. The sport began to attract more attention through the 1950s as manufacturers realized the opportunity to promote sales through racing. At various times Ford Motor Company, General Motors and Chrysler all supported factory teams. In the mid-1970s some races began to get partial television coverage, frequently on the ABC sports variety show, Wide World of Sports. Finally, in 1979, the Daytona 500 became the first stock car race that was nationally televised from flag to flag on CBS. The beginning of the modern era, which NASCAR defines as 1971, also brought a change in the competitive structure. In addition to the Nextel Cup, NASCAR also operates several other racing circuits. Foyt, Adam Petty, Alan Kulwicki, Bill Elliott, Bobby Allison, Bobby Hamilton, Bobby Isc, Buck Baker, Buddy Baker, Cale Yarborough, Carl Edwrds, Casey tawood, Chad Little, Curtis Turner, Dale Earnhrdt, Dale Jarrett, Darrell Waltrip, Davey llison, David Person, Dick Hutcherson, Donnie Allison, Elliott Sadler, Ernie Irvn, Fireball Roberts, Geoffrey Bodine etc.
