Kingston takes South African tourney lead

PAARL, South Africa, Dec. 14 (UPI) -- James Kingston turned in a 3-under-par 69 Friday for a 1-stroke lead halfway through the South African Airways Open.

Wind again impeded play, pushing scores up. Kingston, who is at 2-under 142, was one of only three players to beat par through 36 holes. The others -- Andrew McLardy and Kyron Sullivan, who each shot 1-under 71 Friday -- are tied for second at 1-under 143. Euan Little and Ulrich Van der Berg are tied for fourth at even-par 144.

Kingston credited the "best two shots I hit this week" for putting him in position to take the lead. With the wind making even putting tough -- Kingston missed a 5-footer for birdie at No. 1 and three putted for a bogey at No. 2 -- Kingston hit a driver, 3-wood to within 12 feet at the par 5 fifth hole. He made the eagle putt to get back to even par and into contention.

He strung together 10 pars before a birdie at 14 got him under par for the tournament and a long birdie putt at 16 put him in the lead.
