Diamondbacks closing in on Johnson

PHOENIX, Jan. 4 (UPI) -- The Arizona Diamondbacks announced Thursday they are in the final stages of discussions aimed at signing veteran Cy Young Award-winning pitcher Randy Johnson.

The team has already agreed to terms with Johnson for a contract extension through the 2008 season, Newsday reported Thursday. The report indicated Johnson would be traded from the New York Yankees in exchange for reliever Luis Vizcaino and at least one pitching prospect.

Johnson is signed by the Yankees through 2007.

"We have now been granted a 72-hour window from Major League Baseball to discuss Randy's contract status with his representatives, Barry Meister and Alan Nero," said Josh Byrnes, Diamondbacks vice president and general manager.

Johnson pitched for Arizona for six years and earned a World Series ring with the Diamondbacks in 2002. He has won five Cy Young Awards and been an all-star 10 times.
