Chinese soccer stadium demolished

SHENYANG, China, Feb. 15 (UPI) -- China's Wulihe Stadium, where the Chinese soccer team won its only World Cup qualifying match, has been demolished.

The stadium was razed and sold to a developer for $21 million and the site will be used for a shopping mall, the Shanghai Daily reported.

This stadium was a large part of China's soccer tradition, having been home to the 2001 Chinese men's national team's World Cup qualification match.

Since that game the stadium has been referred to as a "consecrated" place of Chinese soccer.

The main reason that the stadium was demolished and the lot sold is due to the fact that the city of Shenyang will be the site of soccer matches during the 2008 Olympic Games and Wulihe Stadium was not large enough.

The local government plans to build a new stadium in another location.
