AUSTIN, Texas, Dec. 6 (UPI) -- D.J. Augustin scored 29 points Wednesday and fifth-ranked Texas fought off a second-half charge to defeat North Texas 88-72.

The Longhorns moved up in the national rankings this week thanks to an upset win at UCLA last Sunday. Texas ran its record to 8-0.

A.J. Abrams added 23 points for the Longhorns and Damion James had 12.

Texas opened a 48-26 halftime lead only to see North Texas, which earned a berth in last season's NCAA Tournament, rally to within nine with 9:55 to play.

The Longhorns then went on a 10-3 run to blunt the threat.

North Texas (5-2) was led by 28 points from Josh White, who made six three-point shots. Keith Wooden added 17.
