Bruton Smith buys New Hampshire track

FORT WORTH, Texas, Nov. 2 (UPI) -- Bruton Smith, who owns six of the U.S. tracks on which Nextel Cup races are contested, bought a seventh Friday.

Smith, chairman of Speedway Motorsports Inc., agreed to buy New Hampshire International Speedway for $340 million in cash.

The deal, which is expected to be made final early next year, was announced Friday at the Texas Motor Speedway -- one of the tracks Smith owns and the site of Sunday's NASCAR race.

The track in New England is expected to be renamed New Hampshire Motor Speedway.

That track currently is home to two NASCAR Nextel Cup dates, and those races will be run as scheduled next year in July and September.

NASCAR officials said all schedules beyond 2008 will be determined by market considerations, just they are each year.

It has been speculated that the September race in New Hampshire, the first of the 10-race Chase for the Championship, will be moved to Las Vegas in 2009. Smith owns the track in Las Vegas.
