RIO DE JANEIRO, Dec. 13 (UPI) -- Brazil has formally announced its aspirations to serve as host of the 2014 World Cup soccer tournament, O Globo reported Wednesday.

The head of Brazil's soccer confederation, Ricardo Teixeira, made the announcement in writing via a letter to the world's governing soccer association, FIFA, said Brazilian soccer officials in a statement.

FIFA's rotating policy stipulates that the Cup tournament be held in Latin America in 2014, but if no Latin American country is deemed fit to hold the event, the honor could go to the United States or Canada.

Brazil last served as host of the World Cup in 1950, when it lost in the finals to Uruguay, 1-0.
