Swedes want King Carl XVI Gustaf to retire

(BANG) - Most Swedes want King Carl XVI Gustaf to retire within the next four years, a poll has revealed.

A survey found that 64 per cent believe the king should abdicate when he reaches the age of 65.

Of the people that want the monarch to retire, 45 per cent of them would like to see his daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, to take his place.

However, one public relations consultant says the king shouldn't let the poll - carried out by Swedish newspaper Expressen - get him down.

She said: "He should be flattered that so many people think Victoria is a worthy heir to the throne."

Earlier this year, the king made his first state visit to Denmark since 1975.

He arrived in Copenhagen on a Swedish naval ship in May, accompanied by his wife Queen Silvia and daughter Victoria.

Denmark's Royal Family, headed by Carl Gustaf's cousin Queen Margrethe, greeted the visitors together with representatives from Denmark's government.

The Swedish King and Danish Queen then inspected the Royal Life Guard, who were wearing their traditional read coats and bearskin hats.
