Queen Margrethes comments were mistranslated

Queen Margrethe's recent comments about Muslims were "mistranslated", it's been revealed. The Danish monarch sparked controversy when she was alleged to have made what appeared to be anti-Muslim remarks. A British newspaper claimed Margrethe - who has the reputation of being Europe's most intellectual monarch - had said: "we must show our opposition to Islam" in an interview last year. The Royal Danish Embassy has now denied the queen made the comment, and insists her words were translated from Danish into English wrongly. Embassy minister Michael Hjorst told a delegation of Muslim leaders the monarch had been discussing the rising influence of the totalitarian side of Islam, not Islam as such. He said the correct translation of her comment was that "there should always be a counter-balance". He maintained the 65-year-old monarch - who has studied at five higher education institutes, including Britain's prestigious Cambridge University - was never opposed to Islam or any other religion. He also said the queen had emphasised the need for the people of Denmark and Muslims to live and work together harmoniously.
