Prince Charles honours war heroes Prince Charles honours war heroes Prince Charles honours war herBritain's Prince Charles held a personal medal ceremony for troops returning from Iraq yesterday (21.10.07). The prince was reportedly so "disturbed" by the lack of recognition for the efforts of British soldiers in war-torn areas, he decided to organise a reception at his Scottish royal residence, Birkhall, for 50 servicemen and women from the Territorial 51st Highlanders returning home from being stationed at Basra airport. A source close to the 58-year-old royal told Britain's The Mail on Sunday newspaper: "The prince wanted to pay tribute. He has been disturbed by what he sees as a lack of recognition for the efforts of our men and women serving overseas at this difficult time. He said he wanted to meet them and their families to thank them all personally." The prince's intervention could be potentially embarrassing for the British government, who are already facing criticism for the way they are dealing with returning soldiers. However, a government spokesman insisted the event did not cause any problems, saying: "When people come home we make sure we have some form of event to honour them, and if you have served a certain number of days then you also get a medal. If other people wish to host their own events, they are more than welcome to. "Anything the prince is choosing to do is a matter for his office."
