Belgium royals tour Ireland

(BANG) - Belgium's King Albert II and Queen Paola arrived in Ireland for their three-day state visit yesterday (08.10.07).

The royal couple were welcomed to the country by Irish President Mary McAleese, and were the guests of honour at a state dinner held at Dublin's Ãras an UachtarÃ¡in, the president's official residence.

After dinner, the king planted an Irish oak tree in the grounds of the residence before the couple were treated to an Air Corps fly-past, making them the first heads of state to experience the honour since US President John F. Kennedy in 1963.

Later in the evening, the couple attended a reception where guests included the Irish ambassador to Belgium Brian Nason and Garda Commissioner Noel Conroy.

Today (09.10.07), the royal pair are expected to take in the sights and sounds of Dublin, and will visit the General Post Office and the 393ft-high Monument of Light on O'Connell Street, as well as a brief stop at Trinity College, which was founded in 1592 by Britain's Queen Elizabeth I.

Before they leave from Shannon airport tomorrow afternoon (10.10.07), the king and queen will visit Powerscourt House and Gardens in County Wicklow, and will stop at Bunratty Castle and Folk Park in County Clare before going to the Cliffs of Moher.
