Bahrains Prince Faisal has died in a car accident

Bahrain's Prince Faisal has died in a car accident, government officials have confirmed. The 15-year-old royal - the son of the country's King Sheikh Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa - was driving a car when the fatal accident occurred on Thursday evening (12.01.06). It is thought the youngster lost control of his vehicle and collided with a traffic light. He is also thought to have crashed into a billboard. The teenager was rushed to hospital, but sources say he was pronounced dead upon arrival. The death of the prince, the monarch's sixth son, wasn't immediately announced. However Bahrain's radio and TV stations interrupted their normal programmes and started to play moving readings from the Koran. The words from the Islamic holy book are a sign of mourning in the country. Later, the radio and television channels made an announcement, saying: "With all sorrow and sadness, the Royal Court announces the death of His Highness Sheik Faisal." The statement gave no details of the prince's death, saying only he died in "an unfortunate accident". After the brief statement, TV and radio stations carried on reading passages from the Koran. It is not known how the prince, who was three years too young to have a driving license, came to be behind the wheel.
