Kofi Annan

Kofi Atta Annan and his twin sister Efua Atta were born to their parents Henry Reginald and Victoria Annan on April 8, 1938 in the Kofandros section of Kumasi, Ghana. Unluckily his sister died in 1991. He is well known for being the seventh and current Secretary-General of the United Nations. Annan is the first person from a black African nation to become Secretary- General. Annan attended the Methodist boarding school in Cape Coast, Mfantsipim School. In 1957, same year Ghana became the first British colony in Sun-Saharan Africa to become independent, Annan Graduated and went to the Kumasi College of Science and Technology (now the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology of Ghana) to earn his degree in economics. So he did and as soon as he finished he attended the Graduate Institute of International Studies in Geneva Switzerland followed by the MIT Sloan School of Management. Finally he received his Master's degree in Management (M.B.A.). In addition Annan masters English, French, Fante, other dialects of Akan and other African languages. Kofi Annan started working for the United Nations in 1962 for the World Health Organization but left to become Director of Tourism in Ghana in 1974. Two years later he returned and assumed three consecutive positions: (1) Human Resources Management and Security Coordinator, (2) Program Planning, Budget and Finance and Controller and (3) Peacekeeping Operations. On October 1995 he passed from being Undersecretary- General to Special Representative of the Secretary-General. Finally on December 13, 1996 he was voted by the UN Security Council to be Secretary- General. He began assuming his charges on January 1, 1997. Annan's Secretary Generalship was renewed on January 1, 2002 and remained until December 31, 2006. The United Nations earned the Nobel Peace Prize during Annan's Secretary-Generalship "for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world". Annan married Nigerian Titi Alakija and had two children: Kojo Annan and Ama Annan. They divorced in late 1970s. Later Annan married Swedish lawyer and artist, Nane Maria Annan, who had a child from a previous marriage: Nina Cronstedt de Groot.
