Def Jam Records

Def Jam Records is a hip-hop record label that founded in 1984 by the famous record producer, Rick Rubin and Russell Simmons. The record label, Def Jam artists were LL Cool J, Run-DMC and The Beastie Boys. LL Cool J's, 'Radio' was the first album that released by Def Jam recordings. The album, 'Radio' was released in 1985. From the period of 1984 to 1994 Def Jam Recordings was distributed by Columbia Records. In 1988 many record labels including Columbia Records and Epic Records were purchased by Sony. In 1994 major label recording company, PolyGram purchased 50% share of Def Jam Recordings away from Sony Music Entertainment and Columbia Records. In 1998 it became the part of Universal Music Group and was recently merged by Universal Music with Island Records to form The Island Def Jam Music Group.
