The Lord of the Rings

“The Lord of the Rings” trilogy was originally a fantasy story written by J.R.R. Tolkien and released in 1954. It was intended to be a sequel to “The Hobbit,” another fantasy that Tolkien finished in 1949. Both stories intertwine and make up the foundation of a larger storyline. In 2001, a film version of “The Lord of the Rings” was unveiled when the first story in the trilogy, “The Fellowship of the Ring” was released in theaters. Peter Jackson directed the film and had a hand in the screenplay, as he did for the next two films in the series, “The Two Towers” and “The Return of the King.” All three films were critically acclaimed and received hugely positive responses from audiences and each are in the top 20 movies in the U.S. in terms of box office totals. Altogether, the trilogy earned about $2.92 billion worldwide. The main plot revolves around a hobbit named Frodo and a powerful ring that he is left with when his uncle Bilbo leaves their hometown. Sam, Pippin, and Merry are Frodo’s halfling friends that accompany him on his journey to destroy the ring. This quest is sparked and guided by a wizard named Gandalf. A strange ranger named Aragorn helps the group, which goes through many conflicts on the way to their goal. The movie’s popularity was helped by its cast, which included Elijah Wood as Frodo, Sean Astin as Sam, Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, Dominic Monaghan as Merry, Billy Boyd as Pippin, Orlando Bloom as Legolas, John Rhys-Davies as Gimli, and Andy Serkis as Gollum, among many others. The film trilogy won a total of 17 Academy Awards, and was nominated for 30, both of which are records.
