BALTIMORE, Sept. 24 (UPI) -- The Virgin Festival made its U.S. debut this weekend in Baltimore with shows by Gnarls Barkley and the Red Hot Chili Peppers.

At its only scheduled U.S. stop, the musical festival sold 40,000 tickets and featured a day of more than 20 musical acts, including The Raconteurs, all presented at Baltimore's Pimlico Race Course Saturday, the Baltimore Sun said.

While Gnarls Barkley helped enliven attendees of the festival with its 11-piece band and musical energy, the Red Hot Chili Peppers helped close out the day-long affair by offering several of its hits from the band's 22-year career, the report said.

The newspaper said the festival was still a disappointment for its founder Virgin Mobile -- nearly 20,000 tickets remained unsold for this weekend's event.
