Streep: Studio heads avoid older females

LOS ANGELES, Dec. 5 (UPI) -- Actress Meryl Streep says the difficulty facing many older women in Hollywood is based in part on male film studio heads.

"The Devil Wears Prada" actress said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter that due to the fantasy-fulfillment behind the film industry, older females are typically left with limited roles to choose from.

"Movies are people's fantasies," the 57-year-old actress said. "Most of the people who run studios are men. It's not their fantasy, seeing their first wife up there. Their fantasy is seeing somebody more like their second or third wives."

While Streep has met with success in 2006 with "Prada" and "A Prairie Home Companion," the actress explained that the climate in Hollywood nearly ended both productions.

"Well, 'Prairie' almost lost its funding two days before we went to shoot. And 'Prada' ran up against some problems about whether it was marketable," Streep said.

"With movie vehicles with women or older women in prominent positions on the one-sheet," she added in the interview with the paper, "it's not ever anything that isn't completely terrifying and shaky, even in the best of circumstances."
