New York officials upset over video game

NEW YORK, March 31 (UPI) -- The newest installment in the Grand Theft Auto video game series is causing quite a controversy due to the faux city's resemblance to New York City.

And the trailer for the game, which shows the Statue of Liberty, the Brooklyn Bridge and the Cyclone at Coney Island, has political leaders in an uproar, the New York Daily News reported Saturday.

"Setting Grand Theft Auto in the safest big city in America would be like setting Halo in Disneyland," said City Councilman Peter Vallone, chairman of the Council's Public Safety Committee.

Also, a character voice over in the trailer says, "Life is complicated. I killed people, smuggled people, sold people. Perhaps here, things will be different."

"It's despicable to glamorize violence in games like these, regardless of how far-fetched the setting may be," said New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly.

The trailers for Grand Theft Auto IV were released on the Internet Thursday, but the game doesn't hit stores until October.
