Massachusetts publications sold for $70M

FAIRPORT, N.Y., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- The Journal Register Co. will sell seven Massachusetts publications to Gatehouse Media Inc. of New York for about $70 million.

The deal includes two newspapers, The Herald News of Fall River and the Taunton Daily Gazette of Taunton. Additionally, the sale will include five non-daily publications.

GateHouse, which is based in Fairport, N.Y., owns more than 415 community publications located in 18 states across the country, and more than 230 related Web sites reaching about 9 million people on a weekly basis, the company said Friday.

The Journal Register Co., which is continuing its review of the potential sale of its remaining properties in its New England Cluster located in Rhode Island, owns 27 daily newspapers and 366 non-daily publications. Journal Register also runs 231 individual Web sites affiliated with the its daily newspapers, non-daily publications and its network of employment Web sites.
